CAPBT - COAPE Association of Pet Behaviourists and Trainers

COAPE Association of Pet Behaviourists and Trainers - CAPBT
CAPBT, the COAPE Association of Pet Behaviourists and Trainers, is the largest specifically qualified association for pet behaviourists and trainers in the UK. Membership offers all pet owners a guarantee of quality when seeking help with the treatment of behaviour problems, or in training your dog or puppy.

Membership of the CAPBT is solely by qualification, members having to pass the Centre of Applied Pet Ethology’s (COAPE) independently NOCN accredited Diploma in Practical Animal Behaviour and Training.

There are two types of membership of the CAPBT:

COAPE Centre of Applied Pet Ethology
Affiliate Members tend to work with pets and their owners in related fields such as veterinary nursing, assistance dog training and in dog training centres. Their behavioural work may therefore be restricted to animals seen within their own veterinary practice or place of employment, training centres etc.

Practitioner Members have been further rigorously assessed and accredited, and tend to work in broader independent behaviour referral practice. Cases are treated strictly on referral from veterinary surgeons in general practice.

All members work under a strict Code of Practice (please Click Here to read the COAPE COP) which includes the assurance that coercive or punitive techniques and equipment are never used in treatment. CAPBT members maintain their state-of-the-art competence and knowledge through attending various Continuing Professional Development courses offered by COAPE and others, and have ongoing access to a wealth of expertise and support via a lively Members Association of over 300 qualified members. You can be assured of the very best of qualified and up to date help with a CAPBT member!

What happens at a behaviour consultation?
Consultations are held on an appointment basis, either at one of the behaviourist’s regular clinics or in your own home. The initial consultation normally lasts 1 - 2 hours, ideally with all your family present. A history of the problem will be taken and your pet’s behaviour assessed, and then the behaviourist will work with to you to devise an individual treatment programme. This may involve several subsequent sessions, especially with aggression problems.

CAPBT members work in close co-operation with your veterinary practice and keep them informed of progress and developments throughout.
